Interior design by Gwen Hoopman

Gwen has now been serving diverse markets for nearly eleven years, from hotels and high-end stores to individuals with major renovations. She also develops concepts for restaurants. For Weesper No. 122, they wanted to create something unique; it had to be high-end and exude warmth. Throughout the building, she had the walls rounded off. This innovative design softens the clean lines. Today we speak with Gwen to find out how she designed this special project.

How did you go about designing the Weesperzijde?
We wanted to orient the layout in terms of living space to the Amstel River as much as possible. We looked at who would be living there, what the best layout is, how the light falls and what colors and materials fit with it.
I wanted to add cheerfulness while finding a balance between timelessness, classic and modern.

A mix of real materials such as natural stone, wood, glass and linen add atmosphere and warmth to your interior, but also represent tranquility and simplicity. Moreover, natural materials are often eco-friendly, recycled or biodegradable, so you are contributing to a sustainable world.

So much more is possible than just using beige tones and I am happy to see that people are daring more and more, also in terms of color. You will soon find this in this project in the kitchens, for example.

Instead of traditional cornices, we chose seamless finishes to emphasize height. Large windows for as much light as possible, to connect inside and outside more. Everything was chosen from the concept and coordinated with each other, but each floor and apartment was given its own identity. It will be serene and calm, but also powerful and inviting.

What specifically are you designing for this project?
In addition to the layout, lighting and materialization, I am also working on the facade, garden design, fencing, stairs, gazebo, etcetera, in consultation with the technical structural engineer. I wanted rounded balconies, although the builder initially said this was not possible. For the window frames, balconies and fencing, the desire was for a high-end dark brown bronze shade, which was not available in, for example, the standard RAL. After much experimentation, we were able to realize this and this color appears throughout. Our eye for detail really comes into its own.

In the bathrooms, we combined large format ceramic tiles with natural stone sink tops.
The combination with the mirror recessed in curves, bronze faucets and round cut marble mosaic create a harmonious flow in the design.
